    TopChoosing your glasses
Points to note when choosing your glasses

There are a few things to consider when choosing a pair of prescription glasses .

By far the best advice is to stick as close as possible to the measurements of your current glasses until you gain the confidence to experiment a little.

Should you wish to experiment a little then, although not a hard and fast rule, one of the main ones to consider is to ensure that the glasses are the correct width for your eyes and that your pupils are near the centre as the following explains.

This is just a guide but you need to be aware of it.

Point 1. To calculate the size (lens centre to lens centre) of the glasses you need simply use your PD (Pupillary Distance) Plus or minus 8mm.. the closer to your PD is to the centre of the lenses the better . Obviously with rimless glasses this can be adjusted to suit your requirement

Point 2. Make sure the glasses you have chosen suit your PD. The diagram below indicates how to find the centre of the lenses. (another way is to just add ONE lens width and the Bridge Width together to get the same result)

    Calculate the glasses you need

    +/- 8mm
    Suggested Pupillary Distance range of
    Between 78mm and 62 mm

It is Not recommended you purchases glasses Greater than
8 mm more than your PD

Point 3. Ensure the lens Height is suitable for what you need them for. Multifocal/Progressive lenses must be a minimum of 29mm.

Point 4. Ensure that the temple length and the overall width of the glasses are not too big or too small. Remember that on most if not all glasses the temple arms can be bent to suit. (either by professionals or perhaps by yourself using a gentle heat source such as a hair dryer).

Point 5. Just for information, when it comes to the different Index Numbers on the lenses the higher the index number the thinner the lens.

    Top Measuring my Glasses

    how to measure your glasses

If not worn away you should find the measurements of your current glasses on the inside of one of the arms.

Generally it looks something like this: 52[ ] 18 145 These measurements relate to 52 is the lens diameter, 18 is the bridge width and 145 is the arm length.

Lens diameter - The width across the widest part of the lens.

Bridge width - The width across the nose bridge.

Arm width - The length of the arms

    Top PD - Pupillary Distance

    Pupilliary Distance

The PD or pupillary distance is the distance between the centre of the pupils of each eye.

If you have trouble measuring this distance please get a family member to help.

You should have some fun with this one :) ; To measure your pupils remember to look straight ahead and into the distance when measuring the Far PD and focus on a book or similar at normal reading distance when measuring your Near PD. One good way is to put a mark on an old pair of glasses and then measure this distance.

The PD is important to us to ensure your glasses are aligned properly when we make them for you.

PD Far : This is the distance between the centre of your pupils when you are looking into the distance and is used (obviously) for distance glasses.

PD Near : This is the measurement between the centre of your pupils when you are looking at something that is at your normal distance for reading a book.

Multifocal Wearers : It is important to get these two measurement ( PD Far and Near (always referred to in that order)) to enable us to make your glasses accurately.

    Different ways to write the same thing ;

My PD (Pupillary Distance) is marked on my script as (example) Right 31 Left 32.5 (or similar) ?

This method is sometimes used by optometrists and it is the measurement from the centre of your pupil to the centre of the bridge of your nose respectively.

My PD (Pupillary Distance) is marked on my script as just 31(example).

The same as above but the distance is 31 from the centre of your pupil to the centre of the bridge of your nose on both sides
    .

Another Method is (example) 65 / 63. This the best measurement and means your PD is 65 mm for DISTANCE (Far) viewing and 63 for NEAR viewing.

Top Information required to by Eyeglassesonline ?

All you need to purchase quality prescription spectacles from Eyeglassesonline at our low low prices is your prescription.

With your prescription or 'Rx form ' from your optometrist just choose your frames and fill in the blanks in the order form and we will customize your eyeglasses to your prescription .

New Clients - It is highly recommended that you send us a copy of you prescription .

    Top I don't have a prescription - what can I do ?

If you do not have your prescription - "Please" - feel free to phone the last optometrist you had your eyes tested with and ask them to send (or fax) your prescription to you.

Remember, you have paid the optometrist to check your eyes and write the prescription. The
optometrist must - by law - provide you with a clear and readable copy of your prescription (Rx form).

Think of your Optometrist as the Doctor and the store in which they work as the Chemist. You do not have to use the chemist store inside the doctors surgery to fill the script.

Feel guilty about asking ? Remember that typically you will pay 5 to 10 times more through a retail outlet than through Eyeglassesonline for the same glasses so don't get caught by slick sales talk.

    Need a new prescription ?

Simply visit your optometrist for a normal checkup ..one eye test per year is covered by MediCare.

Ask for your prescription ! The fact that there is a law that ensures you must be given a copy on demand must tell you something !

NOTE : Ask them to include your pupillary distance (or PD) on your prescription (but if they do not that is not a problem... see the section below on PD).

DO NOT GET TALKED INTO BUYING THERE AND THEN.... you WILL pay through the nose !

IMPORTANT NOTE TO HEALTH FUND MEMBERS - Invoice Breakdown

The mission of Australian Spectacle Wholesalers is to provide all Australians with A Grade quality glasses at a price that even financially disadvantaged citizens can afford.

You will note that the cost of the frames we sell are rated at 40% of the cost of the base model glasses with 60% being allocated to the lenses.

This reflects the true value of the frames (and the lenses) and not the over inflated fictional prices demanded by some of the brand name suppliers.

Under Australian GST legislation, GST is charged at the current rate of 10% on the frames only with no GST payable of the lenses.

To load the cost of the frames in some fictional manner so as to appease a Health Fund we would severely disadvantage those people that rely on us for there glasses but cannot afford to pay the ever increasing cost of Health Insurance.

Further to this we would have to increase the cost of the glasses just to pay the government more GST. In many cases, with strong multifocal glasses, this would increase the cost by up to $15 in GST alone.

We hope that you can see why we choose to reflect the true cost of the frames and why we have adopted, and are unwilling, to change this policy.
